We are exceptionally proud to present this extraordinary and genuinely significant piece of Australian motorsport history—a factory-built 2002 Porsche 996 GT3 Cup Car, driven by Australian and New Zealand motorsport legend "Gentleman" Jim Richards to victory in the 2002 Australian Nations Cup Championship.

Following his championship victories in 2000 and 2001 driving a GT3 Clubsport, Richards was one of just five private customers worldwide to secure a brand-new 2002-specification GT3 Cup Car directly from Porsche Motorsport in Germany.

What followed was one of the most memorable and tactically brilliant championship campaigns of the era.

The Historic 2002 Championship

Competing against significantly more powerful machinery including Geoff Morgan's Chrysler Viper, John Bowe's Ferrari 360 and Paul Stokell's Lamborghini Diablo, Richards relied on the attributes that made him one of Australia's greatest racing drivers—mechanical sympathy, consistency, reliability and extraordinary race craft.

Entering the final round on the Gold Coast 17 points behind, Richards produced a masterclass under pressure. He secured pole position before winning all three races, overturning the deficit and ultimately claiming the 2002 Australian Nations Cup Championship by 34 points.

Vehicle History & Current Status

Following its championship-winning 2002 season, the Porsche continued to compete in private hands through to 2013 before being preserved and subsequently returned to the track. In 2022, this remarkable GT3 Cup made its return to competition at the Phillip Island Classic, driven by respected Supercars driver/team owner BRT Tim Blanchard. Today, the car is presented in exceptional condition and retains its highly significant competition specification, making it an outstanding candidate for historic racing, Porsche Club competition, or simply as the centrepiece of a serious Australian motorsport collection.
