1991 Robnell Cobra - Genuine 351ci - Bespoke Built - Guardsman Blue/Wimbeldon White Stripe/Wheels - #15 Build Number
We are pleased to present to you for the first time since 1998 this absolute head turning iconic 1991 Robnell Cobra finished in Guardsman Blue with Wimbeldon White stripes and wheels with soft royal blue leather and all period correct dials and instruments as she was bespoke built in 1991. This example chassis #15/61 Robnell's was one of the early cars to be hand made and was built under instructions from Noel Knight of Knight Windscreens and Bobby Darnell owner of Robnell to a specific configuration and colour scheme harking back to the original Cobra's of Carroll Shelby from the 60's. Chassis #15 was built with a 351ci not the normal 289ci mainly used or the big block 429's of later builds, the 351ci was considered the perfect balance between the drivability and road mannerism's compared to the other 2 options. The car was fitted with a 4 speed top loader manual gearbox but in recent years was upgraded to a Tremec 6 speed manual for greater cruising on long distance's. Her original style "Halibrand" "knock off's finished in Wimbeldon White with her functional side pipes just completes her outside stance and gives her a completely different look to the many Cobra's replicas/tributes on the road today. Her authentic hold to the original Cobra's built by Shelby back in the 60's and have still held strong today with mass appeal to many generations of car lovers and will still hold strong compared to other cars of the day.
The Shelby Cobra occupies a special place in motoring folklore which was created by Texan Carroll Shelby in the early 1960s, it combined the US muscle of the Ford small-block V8 engine with a suitably modified English sports car chassis. Later models with the Ford big block 427 V8 could put away the dash in a blistering 3.7 seconds. Being the stuff of legend the real cars rarely come up for auction and when they do command US$$$Millions, spurring plenty of replicas the world wide. One of the best known and most highly regarded of them comes from Robnell Sports Cars which was based here in Australia. Created by Rob Darnell, the Robnell was designed around a steel space frame in place of the original crude ladder affair, had fully independent suspension with Koni adjustable shock absorbers and disc brakes all round.
The bodywork, a mix of Kevlar and fibreglass, closely follows the lines of the aggressive 427 Cobra and was available with a host of modern features including air conditioning, cruise control, leather upholstery and even ABS and traction control. The choice of engine was down to the customer, with most opting for modern fuel-injected Ford V8s mainly 289ci. Details like replica Halibrand wheels gave the Robnell a suitably period feel. This car #15 has the original body and chassis used to make the body moulds and chassis jigs on which production of all of the Robnell cars were based from 1990 to 2003. A total of 67 cars were produced during this time with all the Cobra icons including . . . Halibrand-style alloy wheels, working side exhaust pipes, chrome rollbar, polished bullet exterior mirror and quick-release aero-style fuel filler and chrome nudge bars front and rear. Inside the cockpit is swathed in tan leather with matching carpets, a Nardi steering wheel, stereo and full instrumentation.
